"C5 Keys" for all your C5 key and lock needs

« on: August 15, 2009, 08:50:05 pm »

Grin So me and my lad took our restored C5's on a run down Blackpool promanade at the weekend.  Our C5's... "Sylar" and "Hiro" performed very well covering about 7 miles.

Sylar runs like a dream, the motor runs very smoothly and sounds just right.  Sylar runs on a Humax leisure battery and Hiro on a new Sinclair battery. Sylar is fitted with City Jet tyres and these are just fine and also a steel front wheel.

Hiro gave up the ghost on battery power at about 6 miles and Sylar pushed us all along the remaining mile (simply amazing power hardly needs a pedal up hills either) yet Hiro is no where near as powerful.

The response from the public was amazing along the journey.
Why the C5 was never fitted with some simple suspension I don't know.
Sylar went on to go the next 5 miles on the same battery an charge home whilst Hiro hitched a ride in the car

So what faults occurred?...Well Sylar snapped a brake cable and oddly never seems to get hot or prompt for pedal on the motor load display on the pod.  Just stays as a green led
and this is despite pushing both c5's for a mile.  Could this be a fault in the control box relating to the shunt?

Regardless amazing day and great bonding with my lad...  C5's are brilliant.

I think you will find the answer to your question is down to the batteries. In technical terms the sinclair battery has a higher internal resistance then the leisure battery, or simply put the leisure battery can provide more current on demand then the Sinclair battery. As a result the leisure battery will hold its peak voltage better then the Sinclair battery which will drop under high loading, as the voltage drops, the current will increase causing the motor to run warmer. To be honest, the original sinclair batteries werent noted for their performance, they were built to be light to keep the C5 inside the weight regulations.

Sounds like a great day, congratulations on completion of your C5's.

I've recently collected my first C5 and after solving a motor brush issue with the advice from fellow Forum members now have to get myself a decent battery installed.
Currently I have an ancient, pretty much expired Mini battery which the previous owner has expertly modified to fit the original battery top and ignition switch unit without adjusting the original Sinclair parts.

Please could you advise the model number and ah rating of the Numax leisure battery you have used in 'Sylar'. Have you managed to retain the original battery top and ignition switch? and if so please can you advise how you did this.

I want to keep everything original as far a possible.

Many thanks,

Most people go for the biggest battery they can fit into the C5, but unfortunately the battery cover wont fit a bigger leisure battery unless you cut and modify it. The simplest approach is to buy from a motorists shop a set of quick release battery connectors, about £6 and then you will need to find a way of holding the battery in place if its too large, the original straps wont fit, so look in your local £1 shop for ratchet luggage straps.

Best advice on the battery, is to look for the highest Ah (ampere/hour) the higher the figure, the greater the capacity and more miles per charge.
